It is only week one and Room 20 have already been working hard on writing reports.  Here is a great report written by Flynn:

Brazil

Introduction
Brazil is a huge country on the eastern side of South America.  In this report you will read about Brazil and its sport, nature, and animals.

Nature
Brazil has the largest swamp in the world!  It also has the famous Amazon rainforest in the northern part of the country.  Brazil also has a varied landscape with mountains, grasslands and coastal areas.

Animals
Because of its varied landscape, Brazil has a greater variety of animals and insects than any other country in the world.  There are more than 100,000 insects, 1,500 fish, and 1,600 bird species.  Many rare animals live in the Brazilian rainforest.

Sport
Brazilian people are soccer crazy.  It has been home to some of the best soccer players in history like Messi and Namar.  This year Brazil will be hosting the 2016 Olympic games.

Conclusion
The Olympic games will be held in Rio where the famous statue Christ the Redeemer overlooks the city.

Teach me Tuesday: Guinea Pigs with Caitlyn

This week Caitlyn brought her two guinea pigs in for Teach me Tuesday.  We all got to hold Dozer and Scruffles and learnt some really interesting facts about guinea pigs.  Did you know that they originally came from South America?  They live in many different habitats such as deserts, grasslands and at the edge of forests where they can find lots of vegetation to eat.  Guinea pigs are not actually pigs at all, but are more closely related to rodents such as rats.

Teach me Tuesday

Back by popular demand, Teach me Tuesday has started again in Room 20.  First up was Lucas and Cooper teaching us some soccer skills.  We learnt to trap and pass with the inside of our feet, then practice some goals by aiming for the corner of the posts.  Finally we had a fun game which ended up 0 - 0.  Thanks Lucas and Cooper!

Room 20 Skate Club

Room 20 has been chosen to get a skate club up and running at the school.  First the leaders met with Ms Craig to discuss how it could work.  Then we had a meeting with Steve from Onboard skate.  Next it was time to train some leaders about how to train other students at the school.  Here are some photos of the first training session:

Cross Country Courage

In term two we are learning about courage.  Cross country running is a great activity to explore courage as running can hurt, but courage will keep you going to the finish.  Here's some pics of some courageous runners:

Bonus Homework!

Here is the bonus homework for week 10.  You do not have to do this, but if you have finished your Turangawaewae presentation and want to get a better understanding of Statistics, then you are welcome to have a go:

1.  Ask a statistical question that could be answered at home (some examples: types of birds I can see in the bush, my families favourite dinners, the colour of cars that pass my house etcetcetc)

2.  Collect data: as in class, you can use a tally chart or some other method of data collection.

3.  Display your results: here is where you get to draw an amazing graph!  Remember a graph needs a title and labels.

4.  Draw conclusions: here you can write down what you found out.

The bush adventure

"Watch out!" I exclaimed to Mr Cowie.  Yesterday we were going to the bush with the class and Mr Cowie almost walked into a branch.  We stopped, and we looked like dominoes about to hit each other.  I heard birds making noises around me like a pack of wolves howling.

Later, we were walking through the bush when suddenly...
"Arrrgghhhhh!" I tripped on the shiny slippery slope.  Luckily Mr Cowie helped me down.
"Thanks Mr Cowie, I exclaimed.  Had we finally stopped?  Then he answered with "you have 15v minutes to build a Bear Gryls survival hut!"

First, my group found a large stick.  We shaped it up and placed it inside the tree branches.  Then we got more sticks to keep it stable.  After that we grabbed massive ferns and layed them down on the sticks for shelter.

"2 minutes left!" Mr Clark shouted loudly.
"Step away from your work", he exclaimed.  "First, lets see the results. Lets go to group 6."
"Yay, thats me!" I shouted with joy.
"Hmmmm...this group gets the presentation award," explained Mr Clark.
" Yay!" our group shouted.

After the hut building I felt exhausted.  We then all went back to class and had lunch.

Last week we talked about ways we could strengthen our connections with UHPS.  Some ideas included exploring the area and making things out of nature.  So today we hiked into Lady Pheonix Reserve to discover the area and build a survival shelter.  Check it out:

The Wild Weedy Clean Up  by Seth

"Oh gosh, this is going to take forever!" I thought as I stared blankly into the thick green jungle.  I was with Room 20 about to clean up the nature trail.

First we trudged down the stairs and I heard as swoosh as the rustly wind blew through the leaves.

I started trimming the leaves, then I saw a stick.  I picked it up and shouted "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!" before stamping it onto the gravel road.

We finally finished trimming and started to leave.  As we walked back we picked up everything on the track and threw it into the green jungle never to be seen again.

"That was a good dead" I thought to myself and I felt warm inside.
