Patterns in sewing

Our inquiry topic term is patterns.  A patterns is something that repeats itself over and over again.
To learn about patterns we have been doing patterns by sewing using wool, hessian, and big blunt needles.  We have learnt to do lots of different stitches like cross, running, chain, the bumpy walk, snake, candy cane, and many more.  Our sewing is looking amazing and should be finished in a few weeks.

Barbara Kendall Visit

This week Barbara Kendall came to visit our school.  She is one of New Zealands most famous Olypic athletes of all time.  She has won gold, silver, and bronze olympic medals as well as lots of national and world championship titles.

She showed us her medals and olympic flag.  She also talked to us about how she had an olympic dream, but she actually wasnt good at windsurfing.  Barbara realised that she had to practice lots (for 8 years!!!!!!!) until she got really really good.  She then went and won lots of medals.

She also said how everyone is good at something and you need to keep trying different things until you find the one that you have magic powers in.

Here are what we think we have magic powers in:
Nishil - Cricket
Jonathan - soccer
Ryan - soccer and running
Isabelle - swimming
Jess - rowing
Hannah - swimming, art, animals
Ayla - Netball

Keeping Ourselves Safe

This term we are doing some learning from the New Zealand Police about keeping ourselves safe.  We watched Bryan and Bobby which was a funny DVD about a dog who got lost at the mall.  If you get lost you just need to follow these simple rules and you will be fine.  Its important to know your address and phone number so that someone can help you if you get lost.

Room 16 Masterchefs!

Sous Chef Eva

Late last week the Kids can Cook Kitchen came to Upper Harbour Primary School.  Eva was choosen to be the sous chef who is the person that helps the master chef.  We learnt how to make yummy silverbeet and apple crepes.

First the masterchef talked about the food we were going to make.  Then we walked outside to our own amazing vegetable garden to choose some ingredients.  We collected some dark green silverbeet, then went back inside and made the crepes.

After cooking we all had a chance to taste the crepes.  We put the crepes in our mouth, rubbed our chins and our tummies while making an expression like a masterchef.  Most of us loved the food.  It was really yummy.

Room 16's Amazing Sustainable ideas.

Room 16 have been learning about POPLETS and sustainability.  To create our poplet we first watched some youtube clips about sustainability and discussed ways we could be sustainable.  Then we thought about some BIG creative crazy ways we could become sustainable.  We had some great ideas, but could only choose four to be on our POPLET.  We hope you like our ideas!

A Helicopter Visits UHPS!

On Monday the whole class went to the courts for a surprise.  We were waiting on the courts for a long time when suddenly a huge silver helicopter thundered out of the sky and started going around and around the school.  Then it landed on the school field!  The helicopter was a Navy helicopter and it had cameras and a rocket.

After a while the helicopter started its engine and the water flew off the rotors like a waterfall.  It then took off noisily and shook the trees as it flew away.
