A Helicopter Visits UHPS!

On Monday the whole class went to the courts for a surprise.  We were waiting on the courts for a long time when suddenly a huge silver helicopter thundered out of the sky and started going around and around the school.  Then it landed on the school field!  The helicopter was a Navy helicopter and it had cameras and a rocket.

After a while the helicopter started its engine and the water flew off the rotors like a waterfall.  It then took off noisily and shook the trees as it flew away.

Room 16 Rainforest Poster

This is Room 16's sustainability rainforest.  Our rainforests are important because they provide a home for many different kinds of animals.  Rainforests are also extremely important because they have millions of leaves which produce oxygen for us to breathe.  To make the rainforest poster we first drew a forest using sharpie on white paper.  We then divided it into 24 pieces and we each had a piece to colour in.  Then we put it back together like a jigsaw puzzle.  After that we each drew a rainforest animal and put it in the forest.  See how many rainforest animals you can spot in the forest.

Skyscrapers Zoo Trip

On Wednesday the Skyscrapers went to the zoo!  We went there to learn about sustainability and how we can protect the rainforest and other habitats of animals.

When we first entered the zoo we had morning tea and then we went to see the tigers habitat.  Surprise!  We saw a huge stripy tiger pacing along the rock wall listening to the zookeepers working on the other side of the wall. 

Then we went to the zoo classroom.  In the classroom we sat on beanbag logs and we saw Santos the cute Tamarin who lives next to the classroom.  Santos is a tiny monkey who can jump up to 5 metres!  Sue the teacher let us look at animal skulls, spiders, and she showed us an amazing youtube movie of a Sumatran tiger climbing an enormous pole.  There are not many tigers left in the wild and we need to protect their environment.

Finally we were able to explore the zoo........

Here is a hippo coming up to breath.  Hippo's stay in the water to keep cool and because most of their food is underwater.

Some seals were sleeping in the sun, but these ones were swimming underwater.  Seals fold their fins and whiskers against their body to streamline underwater and glide a long way.

Burma the Elephant was right in front of us!  He was eating his lunch with his trunk.

A trip to the zoo wouldnt be complete without a play on the dragon.

Sue from the zoo also told us how we can build Critter hotels in the bush for animals to use.  

Spot the digi duck!

In Room 16 we have been learning about sustainable lunchboxes.   A sustainable lunchbox is one with no gladwrap, packets, or anything that needs to be thrown into the rubbish bin.  Apple cores, banana peels and other fruit skins do not count as they can be turned into compost by burying them in the soil.

More amazing Room 16 talent!

Here's Kaelyn from Room 16 with the UHPS Golf Team.  Kaelyn joined some other Y5/6 students to represent UHPS at a fun Golf day.  She was one of the youngest golfers in the competition and hit some great golf shots to get the team to 7th place.  Well done Kaelyn and the UHPS Golf Team!

Entertaining clowns!

UHPS were lucky to have a group of dancing clowns entertain us at assembly.  Fifi and Isabelle from Room 16 were two of the clowns that did some amazing dancing for the school to enjoy.  Well done girls!

Writer of the week

Last week Room 15 and 16 went on an amazing bush walk close to the school.  After that we came back to class and brainstormed what we saw, heard and felt.  Then we wrote a recount about our bush walk.

The yellow leaves floated gently onto the hard ground.  I was walking on a rocky substance and I found two smelly ponds and three round balls.  There was a calm river because it was between two muddy mountains.  It was a very long way. I felt the boiling sun sun like a fireball and I heard a barking dog.
